Now that spring has started to surface, many people are starting to get out and enjoy the sunshine, which naturally gives our bodies the Vitamin D it craves. Vitamin D can also be consumed through eggs, fish, fortified milk, dairy products and vitamins.
While each person’s Vitamin D needs are different, Vitamin D is essential for strong bones because it helps the body use calcium from the diet. Traditionally,Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with rickets, a disease commonly found in children in which the bone tissue doesn’t properly mineralize, leading to soft bones and skeletal deformities. But increasingly, research is revealing the importance of Vitamin D in protecting against a host of health problems such as osteoporosis, thyroid problems, cardiovascular disease, fatigue, depression and more. Nutritional experts urge Americans to take some time every day to spend outdoors. The risk of skin cancer from brief exposure is far less significant than the health benefits of raising your Vitamin D levels (but to decrease that risk, always remember to wear your sunscreen!).
